The Athletic’s Phil Hay claims that the 20-year-old, who is comfortable playing in the centre of midfield or as a full-back, has been monitored by the Black Cats this summer.

Hull City and Swindon Town have also shown an interest in Gotts, who featured for the Whites’ under-23 side against Sunderland last week. Championship side Huddersfield Town have also been linked.

And while national reports have today suggested that Swindon are closing to sealing a loan move for the Harrogate-born man, Hay says it is likely that Leeds will wait to make a decision over where to send Gotts.

With the domestic window remaining open until October 16, there is still ample time for clubs to seal a deal.

Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson discussed potential loan signings last week and suggested that any potential temporary signings would have to be an upgrade on what is already in the building.

“There are one or two loan players who we identified right at the very start of the summer, but whose parent clubs are still umming and ahing about whether they are going to let them out,” said Parkinson.

“And with the loans, any young player we've got to be sure that they are significantly better than what we've got at the club.”

Sunderland remain in the market for new faces this summer, with the first deadline of the summer coming at 11pm this evening.
