Sunderland will sign a couple of "really big names" in the January transfer window, according to Sam Allardyce's close friend Phil Brown.
The Black Cats boss is desperate to bolster his squad in the New Year and Brown - who turned down the chance to become Allardyce's Number 2 - believes the club will capture some big signings.
Allardyce will be given the funds to turn the situation around, with the club 19th in the Barclays Premier League four points adrift of safety.
Southend United boss Brown said: "Sam has a couple of 1-0 defeats either side of a 6-2 drubbing at Everton and it was tight in some of the games plus a great win against Newcastle.
"I have been watching very closely, as you know Sunderland are my club.
"Sam will get his opinions and philosophy across but he still needs to bolster the squad too and he will have his targets lined up.
"The January transfer window is going to be important, he has one or two injuries.
"He needs to get to the window still in with a chance. One you get detached it is a horrible place to be and you become whipping boys.
"He will get to January still intact and bring one or two really big players in," Brown told talkSPORT.
