STEVEN Fletcher has been named as the Barclays’ Premier League Player of the Month for September.
The presentations, which also saw Everton’s David Moyes receive the Manager of the Month award, recognised the Sunderland striker’s superb start to the season which has seen him score five goals in five Premier League games so far.
The £12million summer signing from Wolves played in four Premier League games in September and scored in them all – two against Swansea and one against Liverpool, West Ham and Wigan.
Receiving the trophy, he said: “It was good to get off on my debut and get a goal.
“I wanted to hit the ground running because there was a lot of pressure on me coming into the club. I’m delighted for a little personal award.
“We have had a good start to the season so hopefully it will continue.”
Fletcher, currently away on Scotland duty, hopes to take his excellent club form into the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Wales (Friday) and Belgium (Tuesday).
