Sunderland winger Duncan Watmore hopes England can reach the final of the Toulon tournament after their opening win of the competition.

Watmore, along with Sunderland team-mate Jordan Pickford, helped England Under-20s beat the Ivory Coast 2-1 in France yesterday, to follow-up their 3-3 draw against Morocco in the first game of the competition.

Highly-rated Sunderland prospect Watmore has impressed in both of the opening two games for Aidy Boothroyd’s England side after receiving his first international call-up.

And Watmore is already eyeing a spot in the tournament final, with England facing two remaining group games - starting with Wednesday’s clash against Mexico.

“It’s been a surreal experience for me,” said Watmore.

“It’s a privilege to play for my country and is the biggest thing of all.

“The plan is to get to the final of the tournament. Hopefully we can win the next two games, keep working hard and if we get to the final that will be awesome.

“Every one of the lads have been class and have all worked well as a team and we need to keep that going and reach the final.”

Watmore’s wait for a first league appearance for Sunderland has surprised many after his form for the Black Cats U21s saw him named U21 Premier League Player of the Year this season.

But the 21-year-old will be desperate to challenge for first-team inclusion next season and believes he is playing the best football of his career after six goals in his final six games for the U21s last year.

“Getting that accolade for the season is always a nice thing, it’s great to get awards and it just shows the work that you’ve put in and the team have been fantastic with me all year,” he added.

“Confidence is a big thing I’m playing the best football of my life and I feel great and couldn’t ask for more.

“Everyone here with England has treated me so well, the players and the coaches have been terrific and I couldn’t have asked for more.

“I’ve been fortunate with the teams I’ve played with this year and I’ve done well off the back of it so I’m very happy with that.”
