WES BROWN will be available for Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa after Sunderland were today successful in their appeal against the defender’s red card.

The FA’s disciplinary panel today upheld Sunderland’s claim for wrongful dismissal after Brown was controversially sent off in Saturday’s defeat to Stoke City.

Brown will now be available for this weekend’s clash at Villa Park, along with the back-to-back Stadium of Light encounters against Chelsea and Spurs.

Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet says he has spoken with referees’ chief Mike Riley over the incident and is delighted that the red card has been rescinded.

Poyet said: “I would like to express my thanks to the panel for giving the matter their consideration.

“Naturally we are delighted with their decision, which is fair and just.

“I have spoken with Mike Riley and whilst the details of our conversation will remain private, I am satisfied with today’s outcome.

“Of course it was hugely frustrating to have Wes sent off, but we accept that officials are only human and like everyone, they can make mistakes.

“Having the red card rescinded today goes some way to rectifying the error and we are delighted to have Wes available for Saturday’s game at Aston Villa.”

Brown cleanly won the ball from Potters midfielder Charlie Adam in the first half of Saturday’s game, yet referee Kevin Friend decided to show the former England international a straight red card.

Sunderland were incensed by the decision and submitted an appeal against the subsequent three-match ban yesterday morning.
