Young Black Cats Duncan Watmore and Jordan Pickford are in line to have their seasons extended.
Both are expected to be included in the England Under-21 squad which will face Portugal, Guinea, Paraguay and Japan at the Toulon Tournament this month.
Gareth Southgate’s side has been drawn in Group B for the competition in the south of France, which starts on May 18.
England open against Portugal on May 19 in Toulon before their second game with Guinea in Aubagne on May 23.
Paraguay are their next opponents on May 25 in Six Fours before the final group game with Japan on May 27 back in Toulon.
Both players might relish some match action, with both having been regulars on the bench in recent months, with Watmore not long back after injury.
