Owner Stewart Donald has revealed he is working hard on bringing another four or five players to Sunderland.

Sunderland kicked off their pre-season programme with a 1-0 defeat to Darlington on Tuesday night, Jack Ross giving game time to five of his summer signings plus triallist Anton Forrester.

It was the first game of the pre-season schedule but it did highlight Sunderland's desperate need for new strikers, with Joel Asoro close to a £2million move to Swansea City.

Jack Ross currently has Josh Maja and Andrew Nelson to call upon up front, with Duncan Watmore not expected back until the Autumn and Chris Maguire not an out-an-out striker.

Sunderland hope to bring in two strikers before the transfer window closes plus further defensive reinforcements.

Donald, who is out in Russia ahead of England's World Cup semi-final with Croatia tonight, moved to reassure fans via his Twitter account that the hard work around recruitment continues.

Donald tweeted: "To all the @SunderlandAFC I will be relaxing today following England - Other than trying to strengthen the team with 4 or 5 signings of course - that will hopefully be just what we need.

"Might even spend some ur [money] in the process!!!! I’m on it - enjoy the game!!"

Sunderland have so far added goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin, who missed the Darlington defeat with a groin injury, defenders Reece James, Alim Ozturk, Tom Flanagan, midfielder Dylan McGeouch and Chris Maguire to the first team squad.

Sunderland face Hartlepool United at Victoria Park on Saturday before next Tuesday night's trip to Grimsby Town, a game Donald is aiming to attend.
