JERMAIN Defoe is looking forward to “relaxing” on Transfer Deadline Day – and is relieved he got his move to Sunderland sorted out early in the month.

Defoe – who scored his first goal for the Black Cats in Saturday’s vital 2-0 win over Burnley – has been involved in late transfer deals in the past.

However, he is happy to have sorted his future out well ahead of the deadline this time around, having joined Sunderland from Toronto on January 16.

The striker told Sky Sports News: “It’s amazing, isn’t it? Deadline Day is crazy, so hectic, and I think in the house you’ve got Sky Sports News on.

“It’s mad, but for me, I can just relax, just enjoy it and see what happens.

“I’ve been involved in a few of those last minute ones, and it’s quite stressful, to be honest, because as a player, you just want it done.

“This time around for me, fortunately it has happened quickly.

“Coming from a different league, it has been a bit different.

“I’m delighted that it got done early and I can relax, and concentrate on playing football.

Defoe grabbed Sunderland’s second goal in Saturday’s win at the Stadium of Light, which had been billed as a relegation six-pointer.

And he was delighted to do what comes naturally to him.

The 32-year-old added: “As a forward, you get judged on goals. It’s as simple as that.

“That’s why I’m here. You want to get off to a good start, get off the mark and get your first goal.

“I was lucky enough to do that at the weekend, winning 2-0.

“It was a well-deserved win and a win that we needed, so it was good.”
