SUNDERLAND were today linked to several possible transfer targets in the West Midlands.
Wolves duo Steven Fletcher and Karl Henry, West Brom’s Keith Andrews and Aston Villa’s Carlos Cuellar have all been touted as possible Black Cats recruits.
Cuellar and Andrews are out of contract this summer, which Sunderland will certainly be aware of.
Twenty-five-year-old Scottish international Fletcher has been one of the very few successes of Wolves’ season and will inevitably leave the club this summer.
But the idea of Sunderland being in for Wolves midfielder Henry, who is still under contract at Molineux, seems bizarre.
Black Cats boss Martin O’Neill told the Echo last weekend that he is unimpressed with the early start to summer speculation – though he will certainly bee keeping a keen eye on possible targets.
O’Neill said: “I don’t like the sort of speculation where every single name gets thrown in over the course of weeks of speculation and if a paper gets one right by the law of averages they suddenly claim exclusive knowledge.
“We’ll get linked to the likes of Cuellar because people know they’re out of contract. We’ll be linked to others because it’s perceived we’re trying to strengthen in a certain position or some other such obvious link.
“But as things stand, there’s nothing really happening on the transfer front in terms of us making a move.”
