But fresh reports suggest that the boyhood Sunderland fan could be set for a move to one of the club’s League One rivals.

Football Insider claim that Maddison – who is still a free agent after leaving Peterborough United – has emerged as a target for Charlton Athletic.

The Addicks were understood to be keen on Maddison in January but were beaten to his signature by Hull City.

Maddison was linked with a move to The Valley earlier this window, but manager Lee Bowyer played down the rumours.

However, following the takeover of Thomas Sandgaard, Charlton are upping their hunt to bring in new faces – and Maddison could well be one of the names under consideration.

The forward was recently playing with non-league Peterborough Sports in a bid to maintain his fitness as he continues to look for a new club before the transfer window closes on October 16.

Meanwhile, promotion rivals Hull City have bolstered their ranks with the signing of Sheffield United midfielder Regan Slater.

The Premier League youngster joins the Tigers on a season-long loan deal having spent the last two campaigns at Scunthorpe and Carlisle.

And speaking after his arrival on Humberside, manager Grant McCann said Slater was a player who had been on his radar for some time.

“Regan’s someone we’ve been monitoring for quite a while,” said McCann.

“He’s a really good player, really sharp in his movements, really energetic, calm on the ball and has really good legs in terms of running away from people.

“He’s had two very good loans at Scunthorpe and Carlisle, where he racked up over 40 appearances. He’s ready for the next step.

“He was with Sheffield United’s first team all pre-season, and played in their pre-season games. He’s thought of highly there so we’re pleased to get him. He’s a good kid, got a good attitude and is a really good character.

“Our midfielders have done well but to bring another one in helps us and Regan will come in and push them all the way.”
