SUNDERLAND striker Jozy Altidore could make a surprise return from injury for the USA’s World Cup second round clash next week.
Altidore injured his hamstring in the first half of the US’s opening group game against Ghana and there were very real fears that the 24-year-old could miss the rest of the tournament.
But Altidore was back in light training at the US’s training base today and boss Jurgen Klinsmann hopes to have the £7million frontman available for the last 16 clash against Belgium on Tuesday.
Klinsmann said: “We are very optimistic.
“Every day is a big step forward with Jozy.
“It’s been 11 days now and it’s looking better every day. We’re optimistic we’ll have him be part of the Belgium game.”
The US secured their place in the knock-out stages of the competition yesterday after finishing behind Germany to take the Group G runners-up spot.
