Sunderland fan blog: This is why a takeover needs to happen sooner rather than later amid US interest

A topic that over the past couple of weeks has gone a bit quiet, with the performances that Sunderland have been producing over the past couple of weeks on the pitch in League One taking the headlines instead.

The takeover.

It had all gone quiet until the end of last week, when Jim Rodwell - the club’s CEO - issued a statement on the club’s official podcast, SAFC Unfiltered.

Ever since the end of 2019, the connection that Stewart Donald and the fans had has broken down, with the fans calling for him to leave the club and to sell it on to another party.

The takeover of the club was reported to be going well until the COVID-19 outbreak, which then had a knock-on affect and for the process to slow down.

Now, the club have confirmed that they are still in a period of exclusivity - meaning that a potential buyer has been chosen by Stewart Donald and the process is still ongoing.

It still begs the question – when will the club eventually be sold and what will happen if the club hasn’t been sold by January and more players are required?

For Sunderland fans, this will be a well-needed piece of news as everything went quiet for a while.

But at least the performances on the pitch have been over-shadowing the summer’s frustration that the club wasn’t sold.

In the transfer window, manager Phil Parkinson did the best he could with a number of restrictions – the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the newly-installed salary cap - halting some of the transfer work he wanted to do.

Meanwhile, with the sale of the club still not done, there will still be feelings of discomfort from some sections of the fanbase.

So, let’s hope that sooner rather than later, the transaction will be complete.
