The Black Cats are currently searching for a new manager after the dismissal of Phil Parkinson on Sunday, with Gus Poyet the early favourite with the bookmakers.

But the Uruguayan is now not thought to be a leading contender – with ex-Lincoln City and Huddersfield Town boss Danny Cowley now leading the way in the betting.

And with social media awash with rumours over who will succeed Parkinson, Wright says the playing squad won’t be shying away from looking at the names in the frame.

Indeed, the Australian has backed the club’s board to make the right call when it comes to selecting the next manager – and says the new incumbent will be inheriting a ‘hard-working and honest’ set of players, whose eyes are still set on promotion.

"You don't ignore it, of course you don't,” said Wright of the speculation.

"At the end of the day you're going to have a new boss who comes in and like everyone you're curious to see what decisions are made.

"But nothing changes, we're here to do a job. Who comes in is above us, it's not our control, but I'm sure the right decisions will be made.

"Who does come in will be inheriting a good group, a hard-working and honest group that's prepared for the challenge. We've just got to control the controllables and let the rest sort itself.”
