Sunderland defender goes back to Leeds

GEORGE McCartney has returned to Leeds United on loan until the end of the season and the two clubs will now look to tie up a permanent deal in the summer.

The Northern Ireland international initially joined the Yorkshire club towards the end of September and has impressed Leeds United boss Simon Grayson enough for the clubs to discuss the Yorkshire club signing him.

The 29-year-old made 17 appearances for the Yorkshire club before returning to Wearside this month and the move appears to have given him a new lease of life.

McCartney himself would welcome the move and the two clubs entered into provisional talks last month but were unable to reach a successful conclusion – the Irishman’s big wages representing the major stumbling block.
