Jordan Pickford believes Sunderland are growing into a stronger force.

The Black Cats keeper followed his man-of-the match display in the Premier League defeat at Tottenham last weekend by playing a key role in Wednesday night’s EFL Cup win at QPR.

We have a strong mentality within the squad

Pickford has seen progress over both matches as Sunderland look to complete their London week by beating Crystal Palace at the Stadium of Light.

The return to fitness of skipper Lee Cattermole and Jan Kirchhoff has been vital, allied to the arrival of £13.6million signing Didier Ndong, who has provided energy to the side.

Pickford said: “It’s good to have some of the injured lads back.

“We are getting a stronger squad now, plus the new faces that have arrived in the summer.”

One of the new faces, Paddy McNair, was the hero of the win at Loftus Road, scoring both goals, while another, Papy Djilobodji, showed no hangover from his blunder at Spurs.

Sunderland have shown their resilience on both capital trips, battling hard at White Hart Lane against a superior side, before fighting back from going behind to QPR, highlighting the spirit in the team.

“Everyone that puts a shirt on does a job for the team and we have a strong mentality within the squad,” added Pickford who will be the last line of defence against the Eagles in the 19th v 8th clash.
