Sunderland have banked almost £70million after finishing the campaign in 16th spot.

The financial magnitude of remaining in the Premier League has been reiterated after the release of figures demonstrating the annual prize and television money to top flight clubs.

Sunderland received £66.95m for the season - made up of a £52.5m basic payment of television money, £8.25m for games broadcasted live and £6.2m in prize money for their final league position.

Even by finishing above fourth bottom Aston Villa only on goal difference, Sunderland received an additional £1m.

But while rivals Newcastle United finished just one place above Sunderland, their total payment was £75.65m for the season after more of their games were broadcasted live.
