SUNDERLAND will visit Brighton’s new American Express Stadium in the second round of the Carling Cup this month.
Last night’s draw handed Steve Bruce’s men a trip to the ambitious Seagulls, who impressively won League One last season and have spent big this summer ahead of their Championship return at their £105million new home.
Sunderland have never met Brighton in cup action, though the sides have had 34 league matches since first clashing in 1958/59. Sunderland have won 14 times to Brighton’s 13, with seven draws.
Last pre-season, Gus Poyet’s Seagulls were close to beating Sunderland in Portugal, before Fraizer Campbell’s 87th-minute strike rescued a 1-1 draw for the Wearsiders.
The game is likely to be played on Tuesday, August 23 – three days after next week’s Wear-Tyne derby.
The draw also sees Newcastle and Middlesbrough on their travels. The Magpies head to Scunthorpe, while Boro are away to Championship rivals Peterborough.
