SUNDERLAND have confirmed they will appeal the red card shown to Wes Brown at Manchester United yesterday.
Brown was sent off by referee Roger East at Old Trafford, despite central defensive partner John O’Shea clearly being the principal offender in bringing down United striker Radamel Falcao.
However, in a statement released by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) afterwards, East confirmed that it was not a case of mistaken identity and he meant to send off Brown.
Sunderland have now received a copy of the referee’s report and analysed the video footage.
And with the risk seemingly removed of the one-match suspension being transferred from Brown to O’Shea, Sunderland have opted to appeal against the ban, which would rule the 35-year-old out of Tuesday night’s trip to Hull City.
Sunderland will formally lodge the appeal tomorrow morning, prior to an Independent Regulatory Commission meeting later in the day.
