Sunderland and Stoke City 'battle' for Hibernian defender Josh Doig as date set for MK Dons cup tie

Sunderland have been credited with an interest in Hibernian defender Josh Doig, with Stoke City also reported to be keen.

Denver Hume’s injury means Sunderland are looking at signing another left-back before the end of the month, with the transfer window to close on Monday at 11pm.

And according to the Daily Record, the Black Cats are watching Hibernian defender Doig, 18, while Championship side Stoke have also been linked with the player.

Sunderland were linked with Barnsley winger Luke Thomas earlier this month but the 21-year-old instead signed for Ipswich on loan until the end of the season.

Thomas made his Town debut during a 1-0 defeat by Peterborough on Saturday but is looking forward to tonight’s game against Sunderland at Portman Road.

“It’s a massive game and I can’t wait to play in games like this,” Thomas told Ipswich’s website.

"That’s what I came here for and that’s what I strive on. Hopefully I can bring something to the table and help us win the game. I think as a footballer, everyone wants to play in these sort of matches. I like to have pressure.

“I hope to get in the starting line-up and after that I’ll be doing my best to make sure I stay in the team. My fitness level is good and I’m ready and willing to go.”

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Sunderland’s upcoming quarter-final match against MK Dons in the Papa John’s Trophy will be played on Tuesday 2 February at 6.30pm.
