The 27-year-old joined the Black Cats on a season-long loan from Reading in the summer but has made just one league start since the appointment of Phil Parkinson in October.

McNulty’s lack of game time will inevitably alert several EFL clubs, with Sun journalist Alan Nixon claiming Swindon are tracking the player.

The Robins are top of League Two but could lose top scorer Eoin Doyle this month if the striker is recalled by parent club Bradford.

That would leave Swindon looking for a replacement, with Portsmouth striker Brett Pitman also a reported target.

McNulty started the season in decent form at Sunderland under Jack Ross, scoring twice in his seven league games under the Scot.

The forward was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Lincoln at the Stadium of Light.
