Sam Allardyce is the “outstanding” managerial candidate for Sunderland capable of keeping them up.

Phil Brown, who helped Allardyce turn around the fortunes of Bolton Wanderers, has backed the former West Ham boss to save the Black Cats and avoid the cycle of relegation battles.

Allardyce, a free agent, is the leading contender to replace Dick Advocaat at the Stadium of Light if a deal can be struck with Sunderland’s hierarchy.

Sunderland’s clash with Liverpool in late December has been moved for TV.

The game was originally scheduled for Monday, December 28 at 3pm, but Sky Sports will now show the game live on the evening of Wednesday, December 30 (7.45pm).

Sunderland have reportedly taken 15-year old Swedish prospect Benjamin Mbunga Kimpioka on trial.

The youngster is part of the Sirius IK academy and is on Wearside for a four-day trial, reports Swedish outlet UNT.

Kimpioka caught the eye in a tournament in Halmstad over the summer.
