Normally by now the window would have closed and clubs would have done all their business but the delay to the start of the season meant it was extended until October 5, just over a week away.

And even then clubs have another fortnight after that for domestic deals, so in reality Sunderland have another three weeks to conclude their business, either permanent or loan signings.

Having already signed six players (Remi Matthews, Arbenit Xhemajli, Bailey Wright, Morgan Feeney, Aiden O’Brien and Danny Graham) Sunderland are looking to add one or two more.

Cover and competition at left-back is key, while another attacking option would be preferable for manager Phil Parkinson.

Boss Parkinson said: “We've just got to make sure we make the right, logical decisions to add to the balance we've already got.

"We'll get the weekend out the way and then sit down on Monday and reflect on where we are, and what the options are available to us.”
