West Ham United and Stoke City have also been linked with a move for the England striker, who is yet to score in the Premier League this season.

Reports in the national press have linked Sturridge with a move away from Anfield but there has been no indication from the Reds that the 27-year-old will be allowed to leave in January.

Sunderland need to boost their firepower when the January transfer window opens, with the Black Cats amongst the lowest scorers in the league.

David Moyes' side is heavily reliant on 33-year-old Jermain Defoe, who has scored four out of the club's five league goals so far this season.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are weighing up a January move for FC Copenhagen striker Federico Santander - but face tough competition for his signature.

Premier League rivals Everton and Swansea City plus French side Lyon are also tracking the 25-year-old.

Sunderland are understood to have sent scouts to watch Santander in Champions League Group G action against Club Brugge last night.

The Danish side are unbeaten in 20 games in all competitions, their most recent defeat coming in May.

And frontman Santander has caught the eye, with Sunderland in desperate need of reinforcements up front, with the Black Cats among the lowest scorers in the top flight.
