The latest transfer gossip

Sunderland to battle Championship clubs for defender

Sunderland are one of a number of clubs linked with AFC Wimbledon defender Terell Thomas.

The Daily Mail claim that the Black Cats are monitoring the ex-Arsenal academy defender, who is set to depart Plough Lane on a free transfer this summer.

However, the 25-year-old is also thought to be a target for both Blackburn Rovers and Barnsley ahead of the new campaign.

Thomas missed a large chunk of last season through illness, but returned to the Wimbledon match day squad for the final day of the season.

Sunderland-linked winger stalling on contract offer

Sunderland are one of a number of clubs linked with winger Gwion Edwards, whose contract at Ipswich Town is set to expire this summer.

Edwards, formerly of Crawley Town and Peterborough United, is reportedly on the radars of both MK Dons and Preston North End as well as the Black Cats.

The Tractor Boys have offered the 28-year-old fresh terms, but the East Anglian Daily Times say that he is yet to give them an answer over his future.

Edwards has just three weeks remaining on his current deal, and will be free to join another club once it expires.

Ethan Robson linked with summer move

Former Sunderland midfielder Ethan Robson could be allowed to leave Blackpool on loan this summer.

Football Insider claim that Robson – who left the Black Cats last summer – is gaining admiring glances from both the EFL and the Scottish Premier League ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Robson was linked with a number of Scottish sides in January, including Rangers, but Blackpool decided not to let the player depart on loan.

But after their promotion to the Championship, the Seasiders could allow the 24-year-old to leave.

Sunderland linked with move for exciting young midfielder

Sunderland are reportedly keen on Aberdeen youngster Ethan Ross.

Football Insider claim that the Black Cats and Blackburn Rovers are both keen on a move for the 19-year-old, who is out of contract at Pittodrie this summer.

Ross is on the periphery of the first-team squad at Aberdeen and has spent time on loan at Raith Rovers last season.

The midfielder has been offered fresh terms by his current club, but is yet to accept.

There won’t be a major cash boost for Sunderland this summer...

It could be a tricky summer for one of Sunderland’s League One rivals...

Danny Cowley has admitted that Portsmouth will face some challenges in the transfer market this summer – as they operate under a reduced budget

Pompey are one of the sides being tipped by the bookies to challenge Sunderland at the top of League One next season, but they have endured a difficult start to the transfer window thus far.

Ben Close and Jack Whatmough have turned down offers at Fratton Park to join Doncaster Rovers and Wigan Athletic respectively, while influential midfielder Tom Naylor has also been linked with the Latics.

The News report that Portsmouth’s budget this season will be a reduced one, while manager Cowley has admitted that a number of players currently on the books are eating up a large chunk of that allowance.

But while bluntly admitting that it could be a challenging window for Pompey, the former Lincoln City boss is keen to stick to the plan he has put together.

A rumoured Sunderland target has swerved questions on his future

Sunderland-linked Morecambe attacker Carlos Mendes Gomes has been swerved questions on his future amid strong interest in the forward.

The in-demand 22-year-old scored 16 goals in League Two this season – including the winner in the play-off final against Newport County as Morecambe won promotion to League One last month.

Sunderland are one of several clubs to have been credited with a strong interest in Mendes Gomes, with Scottish giants Rangers also among those linked.

But when asked by The Leader about his future and the rumoured interest from Ibrox, the youngster swerved the subject.

“Personally, the season has been good – but there’s always room for improvement,” he said.

“I believe I can up it and improve.”
