Sunderland have been linked with a move for former Liverpool and Real Madrid right-back Alvaro Arbeloa.
The 33-year-old is available on a free transfer, with manager David Moyes still looking to add another full-back to his squad.
The Spanish international, who has played 56 times for his country, has previously been linked with Newcastle United.
Rafa Benitez signed Arbeloa for Liverpool in 2007, with the defender spending two years on Merseyside before moving to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009.
Donald Love made his Sunderland debut at right-back in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, with fellow new signings Paddy McNair and Adnan Januzaj coming off the bench.
New £8million defender Papy Djilobodji was on the bench.
Meanwhile, there is interest from Premier League rivals Hull City and Championship side Derby County in DeAndre Yedlin.
The Tottenham Hotspur and USA right-back spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light and Sunderland have been linked with a move to bring him back.
Yedlin played a key role in Sunderland remaining in the Premier League last season after the American international’s defending improved dramatically during the second half of the campaign.
They face interest for his signature though, with Yedlin also understood to be keen on a permanent, rather than loan move, from Spurs.
