Sunderland linked with midfielder
Phil Parkinson hopes to be busy this summer with Sunderland targeting several new signings as the club aim to win promotion at the third attempt in League One.
And the Black Cats have been credited with an interest in former Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Bolton midfielder Jay Spearing.
The experienced 31-year-old midfielder is available on a free after leaving League One rivals Blackpool. Parkinson and Spearing previously worked together at Bolton Wanderers and he has been linked in the Sun.
Last week Parkinson confirmed he is targeting a minimum of seven summer signings.
Swindon will make a bid for the striker
Swindon Town are set to make an offer for Rotherham United striker Jerry Yates – who has been heavily-linked with a move to Sunderland.
The striker netted 14 times during a loan spell with Swindon last season, and is reportedly being eyed by the Black Cats and Blackpool this summer after an impressive 2019/20 campaign.
Rotherham recently triggered a clause in Yates’ contract to extend his deal by twelve months, ensuring they will receive a fee for the 23-year-old should he depart this summer.
And Swindon are set to become the first side to test the Millers’ resolve – with manager Richie Wellens revealing the club are preparing an offer for the Doncaster-born forward.
An update on the Black Cats hunt for a new goalkeeper...
Sunderland are casting their net far and wide in their search for Jon McLaughlin’s replacement.
Phil Parkinson has made it clear to the club’s recruitment team that he wishes to bring in a further stopper to challenge Lee Burge – who looks set to start the season as Sunderland’s number one.
And the Black Cats’ boss is currently considering a number of potential goalkeeping options as he bids to strengthen his squad.
An interesting claim from elsewhere in League One...
Paul Scally, Gillingham chairman
Steve Evans is one of the best managers in English football. People may laugh at that but having worked very closely with him, he is an all round good manager and he has a good perception for business

Ipswich Town keen on Charlie Wyke
Ipswich Town – linked with a summer move for Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke – have a bullish message for their League One rivals.
Ipswich are looking to bounce back strongly and are aiming to win the title next year after enduring a nightmare 2019-20 campaign following relegation from the Championship with Paul Lambert’s side falling away badly and finishing the disjointed season in 11th, eight points adrift of the play-off places.
They are looking to strengthen this summer and adding a striker to the squad is seen among Lambert’s top priorities, with Wyke’s name mentioned in reports.
