Fabio Borini could return to the Stadium of Light with Sunderland in talks for the out-of-favour Liverpool forward.

Borini was not among the targets Sunderland were looking at to boost their forward line at the start of this month after the club’s bank balance was boosted by the £9million sale of Connor Wickham.

But Sunderland have performed a U-turn over the Italian and are in discussions over a second season-long loan switch for the 24-year-old, who rejected the chance to join the Black Cats in a £14m switch 12 months ago.

The Echo understands that Sunderland are yet to agree a deal with Liverpool though, despite expressing their interest.

Since the start of August, Sunderland have been hit by the news that winger Adam Johnson will be out for at least two months with a dislocated shoulder.

And Sunderland still haven’t added to their striking department, although they remain hopeful of sealing a loan deal for Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj.

After rejecting Sunderland’s advances last summer following a successful loan spell, Borini - who has two years remaining on his contract - started just three times in the Premier League last season for Liverpool.

But it has been made clear to him that he has no future at Anfield and he has been in talks over a return to his native Italy.
