Sunderland's Under-21s have a new man in charge - and Andy Welsh insists he is up to the challenge.

Former Manchester City academy manager Welsh was appointed as Sunderland’s U21 coach last week after predecessor Robbie Stockdale was promoted to first-team coach in Sam Allardyce’s backroom team.

Welsh began his reign with a 1-0 defeat against Manchester United last night, but Welsh knows his main role is to help the academy stars breach the gap to the first team.

But Allardyce says Johnson, plus those players currently on the fringes, needs to show more of that quality if they are to have a place in his plans.

Sunderland Ladies stars Rachael Laws and Beth Mead again saw no action as England ended their tour of China with a 1-0 victory over Australia.

But it was a memorable day for Sunderland lass Jill Scott, who won her 100th cap in the Dewellbon Cup match in Yongchuan.
