Liverpool have emerged as a competitor for the signing of defender Joel Matip.

Schalke will decide on the future of defender Matip next month, with Sunderland and Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool targeting the Cameroon international.

Matip is one of several centre-halves that Sunderland have scouted over recent weeks, as Sam Allardyce looks to boost his defensive options in the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, Yann M'Vila believes his Sunderland colleagues need to show more hunger and more desire if they are to get anything from the trip to the Etihad Stadium on Boxing Day to take on Manchester City.

M'Vila told the Echo: "But for me, every time we go onto the pitch we have to have the hunger and belief that we can win."
