Everton's Darron Gibson has been linked with Sunderland - four-and-a-half years after the Black Cats came close to signing the midfielder.

Gibson has made just four substitute appearances in the Premier League this season and reports on Merseyside have indicated that Everton are ready to let him leave on loan this month.

The Premier League's bottom two, Sunderland and Aston Villa, have both been credited with an interest in the Republic of Ireland international.

Gibson almost joined Sunderland in the summer of 2011 during Steve Bruce's tenure, but the move collapsed due to the 28-year-old's wage demands.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are on the verge of a transfer breakthrough, with Bayern Munich centre-half Jan Kirchhoff expected to be unveiled by the club today.

Kirchhoff will pen an 18-month contract at the Stadium of Light in a £750,000 move from the Bundesliga.

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce will provide an update on the Black Cats' transfer activity at his pre-match press conference at 2pm today.

Allardyce will also preview Sunderland's FA Cup third round tie at Arsenal, where it is understood that goalkeeper Jordan Pickford will make his Black Cats bow.

Pickford was recalled from a loan spell at Championship Preston last week and the 21-year-old is expected to get his opportunity in a much-changed Sunderland side at the Emirates.
