After four months without a goal at the Stadium of Light - Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe is ready to end his home drought.

Sunderland face Chelsea this Saturday, with Sam Allardyce desperate for his Player of the Year to find his goalscoring boots at home.

Defoe netted the late equaliser from the penalty spot to rescue a point away at Stoke City but he last found the the net on Wearside in January’s 3-1 win over basement boys Aston Villa.

"Wherever you’re playing, you’ve got to get the points and to do that, you’ve got to score goals," said Defoe.

"I believe that going into these next few games, I will get the chances.

"Hopefully, I can take them because the goals are needed now more than ever."

And finally, Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole believes the future is bright for the club - provided the Black Cats can extend their Premier League stay.

The former Middlesbrough enforcer says the focus is firmly on the battle to stay in the top flight but he insists the January recruits will be even better next season after a good pre-season.

Cattermole said: "We’ve played a lot better in games for a while now.

"If we do stay up, then on the back of this season, I think the four lads the gaffer has brought in have been great.

"Maybe not so much Dame (N’Doye) because he hasn’t had the time, but with Wahbi, I believe if he gets a good pre-season, he could be a real asset for the club. He could be great.

"With big Jan, I don’t think he’d played too many games before he came and fitness has been a bit of an issue, but he’s been so effective for us, even just from goal kicks being that big presence.

"A lot of us need a good pre-season, but that’s way beyond what we need to concentrate on now."
