The January transfer window is just around the corner and we have news about two of Sunderland's midfielders.

First up, Emanuele Giaccherini looks increasingly likely to remain in Italy next season after beginning to find his feet at Bologna.
The Sunderland midfielder joined Bologna on a season-long loan deal in August after then head coach Dick Advocaat decided the 30-year-old wasn’t physically strong enough for the Premier League.

And elsewhere, young Sunderland midfielder Martin Smith is a loan target for non-league neighbours Gateshead.

The National League Premier Division outfit have already taken one member of Sunderland’s Under-21 squad on loan this season after signing fit-again George Honeyman, whose spell at the International Stadium was extended to January earlier this week.

Allardyce has some selection issues to contend with ahead of the trip to London.

Jordi Gomez is on stand-by to remain in a holding midfield role, if Lee Cattermole fails to return at Palace.

Cattermole missed Sunderland’s defeat to Southampton a fortnight ago after limping off with a troublesome groin problem at Everton the previous weekend.
