Meanwhile, Sunderland are closing in on their second signing of the January transfer window.

Ex-Hull City forward Dame N’Doye is the next signing in Sunderland’s sights, with the Senegal international expected on Wearside to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms, with a view to a four-month loan deal from Turkish side Trabzonspor.

Jan Kirchhoff signed from Bayern Munich last week and N'Doye is expected to be Allardyce's second addition to his Sunderland squad.

Jordan Pickford made his Sunderland debut in the 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The Washington-born stopper has been reflecting on his debut in today's Sunderland Echo.

"The manager wanted to see me in a game and how I dealt with the pressure," said the 21-year-old.

"I thought I did that well and I’ve just got to keep training day-in, day-out, and see what happens."
