Sunderland have progressed to the third round of the EFL Cup after beating Shrewsbury Town 1-0.

Here are Richard Mennear's player ratings:

Sunderland AFC (4-1-4-1):

Jordan Pickford: Had little to do first half, more involved second, made a great save from Toney. Caught well and distribution excellent. 7

Patrick van Aanholt (C): Forced Leutwiler into making a save at least, first half. Needed to see more of him further up the pitch second half. 6

Papy Djilobodji: Looked reasonably assured at the back, won his headers and postionally better. 7

Jack Rodwell: Back at centre-half alongside Djilobodji, Toney was an occasional threat for the hosts. 6

Paddy McNair: In the holding midfield role, covered well but didn't impact the game much. 6

Donald Love: Mistimed a couple of passes and headers. Has had a tough start to life on Wearside, very much a work-in progress. 5

Steven Pienaar: Showed some nice touches, kept play simple in the middle. One of the highlights for Sunderland and will get better after building fitness. MOM. 7

Lynden Gooch: Worked hard in central midfield, tried to be positive on the ball. 7

Wahbi Khazri: Unconvincing on his return to the starting line-up. Looked way off his form of last season. Shot wide late on, good chance. Provided assist. 6

Adnan Januzaj: Sunderland always looked to him for inspiration. Poor free-kicks, though. Superb finish for the winner. 7

Joel Asoro: Troubled Shrewsbury with strong early run. Encouraging display but Sunderland didn't get the ball to him enough. Shot saved second half. Should have had pen. 7

Duncan Watmore (for Pienaar, 60): Really good run in the build-up to the goal. 6

Subs Not Used: Stryjek, E Robson, T Robson, Greenwood, Honeyman, J Robson.

Booked: Gooch (55)

Goal: Januzaj (84)

Shrewsbury Town (4-4-2) Leutwiler 6, Deegan 6, McGivern 6, Brown 6, Dodds 6 (Mangan, 73,6) El-Abd (C) 6, Ogogo 6, Lancashire 6, Riley 7, Sarcevic, 6 (O'Brien, 62, 6), Toney 6 (Waring, 78, 5)
