After a goalless first half, the visitors took the lead six minutes after the restart when Alfie Doughty’s low effort beat goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

Sunderland reacted well, though, with Mowbray using all five of his available substitutes.

One of those subs then won a penalty as Amad was fouled in the Luton box, before converting from the spot.

Here’s how the game played out:

26’ Penalty appeal

Clarke is appealing for a penalty after he kicked the ball towards Drameh and felt it hit the Luton player’s arm.

Nothing given.

Sunderland have struggled to get beyond Luton’s backline so far but almost created an opening there.

Ba’s pass from left to right almost presented a shooting opportunity for Michut who just took a heavy touch.

The ball then dropped for Roberts who cut in from the left before his shot was blocked by Bell.

36’ Lockyer booked

The game has just opened up in the last few minutes as Roberts’ cross from the right was headed over his own crossbar by Osho.

Lockyer was then booked for a late challenge on O’Nien.

42’ Doughty cross blocked

Luton are just finishing the half the stronger of the two sides.

Another low Doughty cross from the left has just been blocked by Hume to stop the ball going into the box.

First-half thoughts from the Stadium of Light

50’ Big save from Patterson

‘Anthony Patterson, he’s one of our own,’ chant the home fans.

The Sunderland keeper just made a big save there after Hume gave the ball away and was caught out of position.

Morris then set up Doughty on the left but Patterson kept out the wing-back’s low effort with a strong hand.

All change in the space of a minute.

Doughty played a short free-kick to Drameh on the edge of Sunderland’s box before the ball was passed back to him.

The wing-back’s low shot went straight through Patterson.

0-1.
