Sunderland v Carlisle United - LIVE

Early team news from the Sunderland camp

Sunderland are likely to be without attacking midfielder Elliot Embleton - who was withdrawn from the win at Gateshead as a precautionary measure after feeling tightness in his thigh.

The Black Cats could hand an opportunity to stopper Remi Matthews who missed the game at the International Stadium as he awaited the results of a coronavirus test.

Meanwhile, trialist Arbenit Xhemajli could once again feature after playing the second half on Tyneside.

Eyes on the opposition

Carlisle United travel to Wearside in what is their fourth pre-season friendly.

The Cumbrians - managed by former Hartlepool United midfielder Chris Beech - beat Wigan Athletic on Saturday having previously drawn with Gateshead and lost to Fleetwood Town.

There are no former Black Cats in the Carlisle ranks, but Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke spent a successful spell at Brunton Park earlier in his career.

Max Power looks ahead to today’s game

The plan is to play an hour, so it will be nice to get that longer stint in and I’ve always said pre-season is a good opportunity to create good habits.  Carlisle will be a step up from Saturday’s game and that’s no disrespect to Gateshead.  The start of the season is not too far away now, so it’s important that we start gearing up in match situations and really get that competitive edge back.

An interesting transfer story before kick-off...

New Zealand international defender Tommy Smith is still searching for a new club after leaving Sunderland.

The centre back, who failed to make a first-team appearance for the Black Cats, has been training with Colchester United and was also thought to be a potential target for Hearts as they seek defensive reinforcements.

Talks with the Scottish side are understood to have come to nothing, leaving the 30-year-old to continue his search for a club.

But a move to India could now be on the cards, with TM India reporting that Smith is on the radar of Kerala Blasters – the Indian Super League side who have been hunting for a new defender all summer.

The Tuskers have previously signed a number of high-profile internationals, including former Black Cat Wes Brown and Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov.

And here’s how Sunderland line-up this afternoon: Patterson, McLaughlin, Flanagan, Willis, Feeney, Power, Diamond, Scowen, Grigg, O’Brien, Gooch

And here’s the subs: Hume, Matthews, Wyke, Dobson, Maguire, Leadbitter, O’Nien, Hackett, Wright, Taylor, Neil

It looks like the usual back three for Sunderland - with Flanagan, Willis and Feeney playing the three central roles.

We’d imagine Conor McLaughlin will play left wing-back with Diamodn on the left - then Grigg up top with O’Brien and Gooch behind.

Interestingly, trialist Arbenit Xhemajli is not in the squad. Nor is Lee Burge.

So where is Xhemajli?

The centre back doesn’t play today - but that doesn’t mean a deal is dead.

It’s understood that Xhemajli has returned to Switzerland as talks over a potential contract continue.

Phil Parkinson is in needed of a centre back, but is keen to ensure he secures the right player - given he already has a limited number of spaces remaining in his 22-man squad.

And here’s the Carlisle team...
