Sunderland fans have taken to social media to experess their disappointment in Ally McCoist being linked with the vacant manager;s job.
The former Rangers boss, who had a spell as a player at Sunderland in the 1980s, became the new favourite to replace Simon Grayson today.
Talk of McCoist, and Walter Smith who both know chief executive Martin Bain well from their Rangers days together - dominated the build-up to the derby game against middlesbrough.
Sunderland lost 1-0 to remain bottom of the Championship and after the game, fans took to Twitter to comment on the state of the club, McCoist and the Boro game. here's a selection of what they said:
@sportmad72: Fed up of this on paper we should be a mid table side. The reality is and on paper we’re 24th. These players aren’t good enough, fact #SAFC
@BrentSaysHurl: Surely Bain won't appoint McCoist. He can't be that oblivious. The toxic atmosphere would intensify & it would be aimed at him. #safc
@crichardson123: Don’t believe any #SAFC player currently believes they can win a game. Total lack of self-belief and in the meantime every fan despairs
@tonyherdman: On way back from another spineless performance they don’t deserve to where the shirt or play for the club #safc
@KingstonSi: On a positive note I believe the last time we got related to the 3rd tier we got promoted as champions straight away #safc #shortout
@mobilemackem: If Bain's idea of an appointment of a genius who'll turn the entire club around is McCoist/Smith, then he needs to pack his bags now. #SAFC
@perchorin: I think this is the same reason why people stay in failed marriages. It’s just too much bother to start over new with someone else isn’t it? Thanks #SAFC
@calsafc9: If Bain hires McCoist & Smith it shows how inept & arrogant he is. Still thinks it's better to hire who you know, rather than the right fit.
@samsonplace: If McCoist or any other member of the Scottish mafia gets the job then that’s me done with the club #Safc
