The Black Cats were dominant throughout against the League Two side, as goals from Aiden O’Brien and Aiden McGeady secured a 2-0 win.

And while some were pleased with the showing, others felt the margin of victory could – and should – have been wider.

But most fans were united in their belief that there were green shoots of encouragement as Lee Johnson continues to implement his style of play.

Here’s what fans were saying on social media after the triumph:

@brettd1981 said: “I really don’t want Neil to go out on loan, I want him to play for Sunderland on Saturday. Really sure we have a player in him and everytime I’ve seen him play he looks ready”

@RokerPark150705 added: “Job done, through to the quarter-finals...But from TWENTY attempts, and SEVENTEEN corners, I'd have expected a 6-0/7-0… Am I right to feel a tad disappointed?”

@Ian_Crow3 posted: “Despite the level of opposition, really encouraging, looked better and more fluid in attack. Dan Neil staking claim to stay and Embo giving LJ a headache. O'Brien put in good shift and Diamond coming on and cap off the display. Now to bring it into the league”

@mark_j_cummins commented: “Get in there lads, power looked great at RB, 17 corners, need to work on them a bit, but LJ is still in the early days yet, wins a win, on to the next round”

@joe_112233 tweeted: “O’Brien starts Saturday or riot”

@JacobKirkbride added: “Looked better tonight especially from some of the players who haven’t been performing up to stand this season but we still need to move the ball a lot quicker in the final third. O’Brien’s hold up play was decent and power at right back could be a decent option going forward.”

@MorganGraySAFC said: “Well played lads. Another final at Wembley is looking very possible now. Hopee we can win it this time”

But @crazycorner01 tweeted: “The performance shown by some of the team tonight was shocking if I was LJ I would be moving at least 5 of the starting lineup out in January”
