The Black Cats boss made 11 changes to his starting XI following Saturday’s win at Bristol City, with Neil keen to give minutes to other members of his squad.

An excellent strike from Wednesday midfielder Dennis Adeniran put the hosts ahead in the 16th minute, before substitute Sylla Sow added a second after half-time.

Here’s how the match played out:

RECAP: Sheffield Wednesday 2 (Adeniran, 16) (Sow, 56) Sunderland 0

Key Events

  • Sunderland XI: Bass, Hume, Winchester, Wright, Alese, O’Nien, Matete, Sonha, Embleton (Spellman, 80), Diamond, Roberts (Kelly, 84)
  • Subs: Patterson, Cirkin, Batth, Gooch, Clarke, Kelly, Neil, Spellman, Simms
  • Sheffield Wednesday XI: Dawson, Palmer, Iorfa, Heneghan (Ihiekwe, 46), James (Hunt, 81), Brown, Byers, Bakinson, Adeniran (Johnson, 81), Paterson (Cook, 72), Gregory (Sow, 44)
  • Subs; Stockdale, Ihiekwe, Johnson, A Hunt, Bannan, Dele-Bashiru, Vaulks, Cook, Sow

68’ Bakinson booked

A few hefty challenges have just been made in the last few minutes.

First Palmer’s tackle left Sohna on the ground, before Bakinson’s challenge on O’Nien near the centre circle resulted in a yellow card.

63’ Sonha cross overhit

Some more sustained possession from Sunderland but they lacked the quality needed in the final third as Sonha’s cross from the left was overhit.

Diamond then did well to break down the right and cross the ball for Roberts but Ihiekwe managed to stop the delivery.

56’ Goal Sheffield Wednesday (Sow)

Sunderland are up against it now.

A loose pass from Bass towards Alese was cut out by Adeniran who then had space to send a cross into the box from the right.

Sunderland’s defence wasn’t set and Sow was free to convert the chance.

2-0.

That must have hurt.

Hume has just taken a shot right in the face after the ball dropped to James from a free-kick.

The Sunderland defender is back on his feet now.

That was better from Sunderland after they worked the ball to the right where Hume’s low cross was almost converted by Embleton.

The midfielder couldn’t quite reach it.

48’ Over from Byers

After a pause in play Byers sends the free-kick over the bar.

46’ Wright denies Paterson

Early chance for Wednesday at the start of the second half after Adeniran pushed Alese off the ball and crossed for Paterson, who was thwarted by Wright.

Adeniran has now gone down after a collision but has just got back to his feet after winning a free-kick.

Michael Ihiekwe has replaced Heneghan for Wednesday at the break.
