Alex Neil’s side held their own for the opening 30 minutes before Dan Neil was shown a straight red card and defender Anel Ahmedhodzic headed the hosts ahead.

The Blades then made it 2-0 shortly after half-time after a close-range finish from Max Lowe.

Sunderland responded well and pulled one back through Lynden Gooch but weren’t able to take anything from the game.

Here’s how the game played out:

8’ Chances at both ends

Clake has also produced a powerful run down the left before his cross was cut out by Egan.

5’ Neil tidies up

The hosts are starting to see more of the ball now and almost created an opening there as a switch to the left went over Gooch’s head for Norrington-Davies to receive it.

The latter’s low cross was cleared by Neil who did well to track back.

2’ Gooch shot saved

Bright start from Sunderland who have once again started in a 3-4-1-2 system, this time with Neil and Embleton in midfield.

Gooch just cut in from the left before firing a shot straight at Foderingham.

What to make of that side

So it’s two changes from the side which started against QPR last time out.

As expected Luke O’Nien comes in for the injured Daniel Ballard, the change which was made in the first half on Saturday.

Elliot Embleton has also come into the starting XI in place of Corry Evans. We can only assume the Sunderland captain has picked up an injury.

Sheffield United have also made two changes with Ryan Brewster replacing the injured Billy Sharp up front.

Manchester City loanee James McAtee will start in midfield in place of John Fleck.
