Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has been giving tips to Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who remains without a goal this season – with Sunderland next up.

Kane enjoyed a goal-laden campaign with Spurs last season, bagging 32 goals as Mauricio Pochettino’s men secured a fifth-place Premier League finish.

But this season has proven more problematic for the 22-year-old, who hopes to win an England start in Saturday’s Euro 2016 qualifier away to San Marino.

Shearer, the Premier League’s record scorer, recently interviewed Kane as part of a feature for Football Focus, and when the cameras were turned off, the former Newcastle striker gave some advice to England’s greatest hope.

“He’s a top man,” said Kane.

“It was good to talk to him. He’s been in the same sort of situation as I am now and he gave me some good tips.

“He said the best strikers in the world just put it to the back of their mind and focus on the next chance or goal - and that’s what I try to do.

“It was great to hear that’s what he went through sometimes and what he did about it.”

Doubters may be writing Kane off, but he has not lost faith in his own ability.

“I know I am more than that (a one-season player),” added Kane, who has notched one goal against Sunderland in three previous appearances.

“I don’t think last year was lucky. I worked very hard to get where I was and I know I have got to keep working hard to progress but I am very self-confident.

“My start to the season has been OK. It could have been better.

“I would like to have scored by now, but football doesn’t always work like that.”
