Rowell Report: United may be favourites, but you just never know

I KNOW most of us were hoping for West Ham in the Capital One Cup semi-finals and I’m sure the Hammers fans were hoping to draw us too.

But it’s the red half of Manchester that we need to overcome if we are to get to Wembley.

Older Sunderland fans will remember a series of classic cup ties against United in the 60s when the game at Roker Park attracted so many people, one of the gates broke and many saw the game free of charge.

The official attendance was nowhere near how many people were actually there and on the pitch, Sunderland went toe-to-toe with the Manchester United team full of famous names before falling in a second replay.

I don’t think the Stadium of Light gates are in any danger this time around, but this is a glamour tie and the players have the chance to go out and grab some glory.

Yes, United will be everyone’s favourites to go through, but so were Chelsea in the last round and Sunderland usually perform better when there’s little expectation and they have the tag of underdogs.
