I DON’T think I’ll be the only Sunderland fan who’ll be thinking we could have been preparing to face Reading at home this weekend for a place in the semi-final of the FA Cup.
What a missed opportunity, especially with so many top teams already knocked out, including the best two teams in the country, Chelsea and Manchester City,.
The memory of last season’s Capital One Cup final is still fresh and another trip to Wembley could have had a galvanising effect on everyone and boosted the morale of both players and supporters.
Sunderland’s next opponents Aston Villa are still in the competition with a home tie to near neighbours West Bromich Albion, while we have a free weekend.
That may well give the Sunderland players more time for rest and preparation, but I’d be very surprised if any of them wouldn’t rather be playing in a game that could get them to Wembley.
