SUNDERLAND defender Valentin Roberge has returned to his native France after joining Stade de Reims on a season-long loan.

The Black Cats told Reims to make a concrete offer for Roberge after receiving an enquiry from the French side last week for the 27-year-old, who has started just eight Premier League games since arriving at the Stadium of Light last summer.

Roberge was keen to join the Ligue 1 outfit and after Sunderland boosted their defensive options with the loan signing of Sebastian Coates, boss Gus Poyet has sanctioned the former Maritimo man’s departure.

The centre-half becomes the second of last summer’s three Bosman arrivals to leave the Stadium of Light today after Modibo Diakite’s Sunderland contract was terminated by mutual consent.
