Sunderland are set to be purchased by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, with a deal likely to be done in January – but what would it mean for their standing in the English game?

While Louis-Dreyfus’ substantial wealth may not come to the fore in League One – given the salary cap restrictions – it could become vital as the Wearsiders climb the pyramid.

So using data from the summer of 2020, we’ve estimated where the Black Cats could rank among the country’s richest clubs when the takeover is completed:

No surprises here, with Manchester City topping the English rich list. Their Abu Dhabi-based owners are understood to be worth around £23.3bn.

Championship side Stoke City are owned by the Coates family - who founded bet365 and are estimated to be worth in the region of £7.17bn.
Worth an estimated £6.8bn, American businessman Stan Kroenke has backed the Gunners with his cash in recent years.
Wolves are owned by the Fosun International group, whose wealth is understood to be around the £5.2bn mark.
Villa are owned by the NSWE Group - whose two controlling shareholders, Nassef Sawiris and Wes Eden, are worth a combined £5bn.
The Srivaddhanaprabha family have turned the Foxes into regular challengers for a spot in Europe, thanks in part to their £4.6bn fortune.
The fairly reclusive Joe Lewis owns Spurs, who he has bankrolled with his wealth of around £3.9bn.
The Glazer Family - worth £3.8bn - have often come in for criticism from the Manchester United fanbase having owned the Red Devils for just shy of two decades.
Owner Gao Jisheng and his £3.1bn fortune may be moving on soon, but for now they remain in control of Southampton.
Another Premier League side high on the list, Crystal Palace's owner Joshua Harris is worth around £2.7bn.
Some may be surprised to see the current Premier League champions this far down on the list - although the Fenway Sports Group's £2.1bn fortune is nothing to be sniffed at.
Given Kyril Louis-Dreyfus' $2billion+ trust fund, and recent data relating to fellow shareholder Sartori's wealth, we can estimate that Sunderland's ownership group will be worth around £1.9billion when the takeover is completed.
Another club where a change in ownership may come soon, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley was estimated to be worth around £1.8bn earlier this year.
He splashed the cash this summer, and Everton owner Farhad Moshiri is thought to also be worth in the region of £1.8bn.
