The Black Cats may be battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League, but a number of players have impressed this campaign, including some of Sam Allardyce’s signings.

We ran a poll to give fans the chance to have their say and the surprise choice was Holland international Patrick van Aanholt.

The 25-year-old endured a difficult start to the campaign but has since become one of the first names on the teamsheet.

The Dutch left-back - who has turned his season around under boss Sam Allardyce - won half of the votes cast by supporters taking part in our poll.

Initial favourite and topscorer Jermain Defoe was second with 34 per cent of the vote, while January signing Jan Kirchhoff was third with 11 per cent.

Midfielder Yann M’Vila scooped four per cent of votes, while Lamine Kone won just one per cent of the vote.
