The Black Cats need reinforcements in several positions following seven first-team players departing this summer.
Jordan Jones has gone back to Rangers whilst the club didn’t offer new deals to Max Power, Remi Matthews, Josh Scowen, Chris Maguire, Grant Leadbitter and Dylan McFadzean.
But which youth players could the Wearsiders target from the Premier League 2? Here, we take a look:
1. Caoimhin Kelleher
Liverpool need to find first-team football for some of their hot prospects. Indeed, according to reports, Sunderland's League One rivals Ipswich Town want to sign Caoimhin Kelleher on loan. The Black Cats, however, are in the market for a stopper too - and the 22-year-old could prove to be the perfect option. Photo: Pool
2. Troy Parrott
With opportunities at Tottenham limited, Troy Parroty may once again find himself out on loan. The Republic of Ireland international may be set for the Championship, however, following a decent loan stint with Ipswich Town in League One last season. Photo: Laszlo Szirtesi
3. James Garner
Sunderland have previously been linked with a loan move for highly-rated midfielder James Garner. However, reports have suggested that Garner may be handed a chance in Manchester United's first-team this summer following a good loan stint at Nottingham Forest. Sunderland, you'd think, would have to pull off a major coup to secure his services. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall
4. Louie Barry
The Aston Villa youngster scored against Liverpool in the FA Cup last season. But at just 17-years-old, the Villians may be tempted to seek a loan for Barry, who can play as both striker and winger. Photo: HANNAH MCKAY
