Will Jozy Altidore be leaving Sunderland in January? Will Jermain Defoe be coming in?

We held a live online Q&A which gave supporters the chance to grill Sunderland reporter Chris Young about what business the Black Cats are likely to do during the January transfer window.

It has been a quite start to the window at the Stadium of Light but Black Cats boss Gus Poyet is keen to strengthen his options.

Below is selection of some of the best questions and answers sent in via Facebook and Twitter.

1) Bander LFCFAN @BanderLFC

What about Fabio Borini, will Sunderland return for him in this market?

CY: I’m told there’s no chance of Sunderland going for Borini this month. They were stung by the pursuit which went on and on and on during the summer, and him effectively pricing himself out of a move with wage demands that I’m told were around £90k a week. In the summer? You never know. If he continues to play a fringe role at Liverpool (although he started on Saturday) it’s a possibility. Poyet still on good terms with him.

2) @davidbanks94

Are there any bids placed for any players and who are they?

CY: There’s certainly talks underway regarding Altidore sale and potential Defoe swap. Those talks are at an early stage though, far from anything agreed yet. That’s a possibility, and Sunderland still very mindful of their one domestic loan. Likely that the club will wait until the end of the window to see who is available from the PL heavyweights and then try to beat off the competition.

3) Rick:

Is it a case of one in, one out, for Sunderland regarding transfers?

CY: Well, in terms of a potential Altidore / Defoe swap, yes. But think Sunderland will again look to offload Cabral and Mavrias. It’s already been agreed for the latter to go out on loan. Just a question of where. And as I said before, think they’ll use their domestic loan. So probably 1 or 2 in

4) Michael Bowers:

Chris, do you know if Sunderland are looking at the likes of Charlie Austin, Aaron Lennon, Danny Ings or Jordan Rhodes in this window mate? Also, how realistically is swapping Altidore for Defoe in January?

CY: Austin, would cost huge money, so no.

Lennon a possibility if he’s on loan, although I’m told Spurs want to sell, rather than loan.

Ings someone everybody, including Sunderland, is watching with his contract up next summer. But told Sunderland have not been scouting him religiously, i.e. every Burnley game. Think they’ll be a real battle for his signature in the summer.

Jordan Rhodes? Depends if Blackburn still want silly money for him, with their awful financial situation.

Defoe and Altidore swap a possibility, although Defoe wages the big stumbling block

5) Rob Hutch @RobHSafc

How good is the relationship between Gus and them upstairs (Short and Congerton)?

CY: Don’t think you needed to read between the lines too far to realise there were tensions during the summer. Poyet’s comments last month on recruitment were telling too. Like any manager, he wants more money.

But only so much can be done at once.
