GUS Poyet says Sunderland have received no approaches for Lee Cattermole.

The former Black Cats skipper has been strongly linked by sources in the Potteries with a January move to Stoke City and a transfer fee of £5million has been bandied about.

But Poyet says that so far, such talk can only be described as speculation.

“There have been no offers at all for Lee Cattermole,” said firmly.

“So it could be plenty of rumours.

“I try to be helpful when I can be to the media over transfers although it is important I do not say anything which might affect a transfer.

“But in this case, it is an easy question for me to answer: we have definitely not had an offer for him.”

Poyet, who confirmed new signings Santiago Vergini and Oscar Ustari will start in tomorrow’s fourth round FA Cup tie against Kidderminster Harriers, is as more focused with getting in players in, rather than getting them out.

And he says that Sunderland’s stunning Capital One Cup semi-final victory over Manchester United on Wednesday might have fringe benefits in the transfer market.

He said: “I can’t say it has had an immediate impact but it is great for the reputation of the team.

“It makes a positive impact worldwide when you achieve something like that and it will hopefully help us in the transfer market.

“Players are less keen to join a team that is struggling badly but when the team is improving or does something like we did on Wednesday, it is obviously a little bit more of an attractive idea.

“We are happy with the way it is going in the transfer market so far, we have three new players in already and that is good, but there is more to do.”
