GUS Poyet will take the pressure of Sunderland’s Premier League run-in in his stride, insists first-team coach Charlie Oatway.

The Black Cats’ boss is currently embroiled in fighting the twitchiest of relegation battles in his first season in the Premier League.

But Oatway insists the Uruguayan is the perfect man for the challenge Sunderland are up against.

“Gus loves the responsibility of the job - that’s him all over,” he said.

“He relishes the pressure and that’s why he was destined to become a Premier League manager.

“He loves that side of it.

“He loved it as a player, he loved it as a coach at Tottenham Hotspur and now he loves it as a manager at Sunderland.

“As for the stress side of it, you’d have to ask him that but I can honestly say that I feel I can speak for him when I say he’s really enjoying it.”

Poyet likes to keep things relaxed and easygoing around the training ground as much as he possibly can.

And Oatway says the squad is keeping its head and keep itself focused on doing things right at the Academy every day.

“I think Gus gets more pressured and stressed by me on the training pitch every day than he does by the relegation battle!” joked Oatway.

“From what he does on the football side, I don’t think Gus has ever been under any illusions - he knows he’s here to do one job and one job alone and that’s to keep this club in the Premier League.

“He always knew that was not going to be accomplished with 10 games of the season to go.

“We knew from Day One that it was likely to go to the wire and as far as that side of things is concerned, nothing’s changed.”
